subte sightings
Since my office moved I have to take the subte twice a day and sometimes more if I do something fun after work. I thought that I would see MORE crazy things than I actually do, so sometimes it’s a bit of a letdown. That said this week I saw two things that gave me pause:
- A women wearing jeans, a long-sleeve black shirt and a puffy vest with a fur-lined hood. That outfit wouldn’t be so strange except for the fact that it’s SUMMER IN BUENOS AIRES! And we’ve been suffering through a brutal heat wave for the last week. To compare, I was wearing a short, sleeveless dress and sandles and I was sweating buckets. This woman didn’t look uncomfortable in the slightest. During my subte ride I tried to guess what could possess someone to wear clothes like that in the summer: directly arriving after being in a cold climate? Illness? A weird skin disease? Being in the process of moving without a sufficient amount of boxes and therefore needing to wear as much clothing as possible?
- Later on in the week I watched a woman paint her nails while standing on the subte. At first I was really impressed by her skills, until she started to glare at the people entering the subte and filling in around her because there was no place else to stand. Really lady? You think that people aren’t going to get in your subte car during rush hour just so you can finish your paint job in peace? Please.
